I really hate to think that the anyone would do it for this reason, but I can't help but wonder if these Hollywood people are doing it for the notoriety? You have a good point - there are plenty of children in America that need a good home, but they reach out to ONE in a country that is ravaged. Why can't they pick an entire community, donate to help make all of their lives better instead of just one kid, who will live much better now than any child here that is in dire straits?

Charity should start at home, but we always end up helping those in other countries because they are far less off. I think it is a great idea to do this on a larger level (i.e., help those that are worse less off in the grader scheme and later spread some of the funds to help our kids here).

If they are interested in bringing a different culture to that child or embracing that child's culture (whatever the reason), why help one or two when they have enough money to feed a few villages for life. I'd rather know that I helped MANY than just one.....unless I was striving to get my name in as many publications as possible to show what a good person I was...I reached out to another country - not once but twice...look at me....blah, blah, blah...

I think Hollywood does help in America, but they give to big organizations, who then help with rents, gas, lights and etc. Like if you dial 211 , they answer and refer the needy families, to places that MIGHT help. Like the Salvation Army. They will only help the family one time. I have donated lots of money to the Salvation Army and this family that was in desperate need had recieved some, not all the help for their rent. Then a few years later, the same family went back to ask for another helping hand and they were turned away. So every Organization have their own rules and guidelines. It would be great if we could just send the needy familys names into Hollywood and they would help. Many needy families and children are so limited. I hope they do help, as there are many needy children and parents in this country too. If you can find a way to ask Hollywood to help families, that would be great .

Yea.....if you travel to any 3rd world country and then go to the supposed poorest parts of the US, then you won't need to ask this question. The poorest of the US are much better off than the poor or sometimes even middle class of other nations.

In America, even if a poor child is hungry, it is unlikely that they will starve to death. (We have sufficent social services and infrastructure of the state to help) In many undeveloped nations children are dying in the streets.

Also, America does not have the same magnitude of outbreaks of disease as in other areas of the world.

All children need help, not just American children. Also, children in the US are much better off than those from say, Africa. Many folks who think that way fail to take that into account.

Because without their celebrity no one would care about them. We are aware of the poverty here but the conditions in the third world countries makes our poverty look prosperous. Imagine living in a tin roofed, tin walled "home" without electricity, cooking over an open fire, in the middle of summer. No running water and no bathroom facilities.

Im sure they do both. What you hear and see from the press is another matter. And remember a lot of celebrities try to do things because someone needs help, not to call a press conference and make themselves look good.

Because the poorest American still lives 12X better than any other poor person.

Also, Americans seem to just want a handout.

Remember: give a man a fish, he eats for a day.
Teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.
