Cats, like many different animals, use scent to perceive others. each cat his very own diverse scent which identifies it from different cats. Cats do not count merely on sight for identity. I had 2 clutter acquaintances and while one become exterior and the different interior, the cats might hiss at one yet another by the glass. they might in basic terms provide up while they might scent one yet another to verify the identity of a chum and not an invader!

They have scent glands on their faces. That's why they rub around your legs & head butt you sometimes. They depend on scent more than sight. Don't all black cats look the same sometimes? They are making sure they know each other.

They're not sniffing their mouths, they are actually touching noses. Every feline nose surface is like our thumb prints, they identify ourselves and cant be duplicated. So when they touch their noses slightly using a sniffing action, they are identifying each other.
