yeah, the same thing happend to me, i found a puppy and he had roundworms, but we took him to the vet immediately when we found him. (hey, he's black too!) they gave us the treatment, and it workd wonders. he was all better in like 2 weeks. the only problem that i have heard of with otc dog medication, is that something that they put in hertz prand stuff, most dogs are allergic to. i know some of their flee stuff almost killed one of my puppies b4. So i would suggest to you, to just go ahead and go to the vet. you know what they say; better safe than sorry!

DO NOT use over the counter wormers. Your Vet will give you the proper wormer. Also, do a follow up with the Vet, since eggs may hatch and the puppy may need more than one treatment.
Round worms can kill a very small dog, so don't take chances. And they can be transferred to humans.

I would get the dewormer from your vet. With over the counter dewormers, they may not be safe for a puppy this small, or they may not work at all. Has your puppy had a stool sample checked for other types of parasites? If not, I would suggest bringing one in to the vet to have that analyzed.
It is really common for puppies to have roundworms. But it is also very important to treat them properly as they are zoonotic, or contagious to people. They are transmitted via the fecal - oral route, meaning that good hygiene after handling the pup or his stool will prevent transmission, but if you have children around the puppy, they may not always be so careful. So get them taken care of properly, to prevent further problems.
Good luck!

Over the counter wormers are nothing but a waste of money. Ask your vet to give you a good all around wormer...
By the way, ALL pups have round worms & just to keep on top of things, your pup & or dogs should be treated with a good all around wormer twice a years, unless your vet recommends a different schedule....

Hi Pomerania, Go to Petsmart and ask for roundworm pills.Tell then how old and the weight of your baby. The dewormer is like the dewormer your vet has, but alot more cheaper. I know that it works,i have used that and their tapeworm pills are like the vets. You can't go wrong with these 2 wormers when needed. A Friend.

My mini dachshund ..puppy maybe weighed 1.5 lbs had worms, round worms, I bought "Strondig" from the vet" and wormed her myself.. gave her a couple of drops from an eyedropper.
Over the counter worm medicine doesn't usually work well.
The Strondig ..cost about $7:00 and I have enough left for many more wormings..keep refrigerated though.

Round worms are the easiest of all worms to treat in dogs. Go to PETCo and get their liquid gold dewormer. Follow the directions on the bottle.
But, it is very, very important to get the dog to the vet, along with a fecal sample. Sure, the Pet Gold stuff works great, but there is no substitute for a vet.
It could be possible that you are actually seeing tapeworm segments, until you know your worms, see a vet and bring in a poop sample.
Good luck with this. A couple of my dogs had round and one had tape, the best thing to do it kill the worms, in the manner most safe for your dog.
Let us know how it turns out.

Take the stool to the vet, if it is only roundworms your vet will worm her with something like Pyrantal pamoate. If he sees any hook's or whips, he might try panacur for 3 days.

I had a small 4lb dog that suffered the same malady as a pup. The best treatment is to take her to a veterinarian. A single treatment took care of our "Scooter's" problem and she has had no recurrence in 10 yrs.
