My little Yorkie is Pregnant. I don't know much about dog breeding. I do know that she cuts the little's ones umbilical cord. Is there anything that I should be aware of and what I should do to help her with the delivery. How long is she going to be pregnant for?

I don't mean to be disrespectful but there are far too many homeless animals out there for amateurs to be breeding. You should not breed dogs unless you honestly believe that the offspring of your dog will make a genuine contribution to the breed in order to maintain quality and standard.
However, here we are and you have a pregnant Yorkshire. I think the most important thing is before she delivers, give her a supplement to ensure she gets the calcium she needs. Pregnant and nursing dogs require a lot more than ones that are not. Also, try to be with her or have someone with her when she delivers. New mothers usually require a little bit of help. Also, if there are complications you will be able to take her to a vet right away. The biggest concern with new mothers is that they may not remove the placenta quickly enough for the pups to get proper oxygen. Sometimes they are worried about the next pup too much and don't spend enough time with the one delivered beforehand. You will need to remove the placenta around the pups face first, then the rest of the body. I know this will sound odd, but then you need to hold the puppy upside down and "swing" it back and forth (start between your knees and swing it forward a few times) to get the mucous out of the babies nasal passages. Once the puppy starts to breathe and whimper (whimpering is good for a newborn!), then you know he can make it on his own and you can return him to the mother right away. Also make sure she does not inadvertantly lay on the pups. They could suffocate this way also.
Have iodine handy to dip the remainder of the umbilical cord in. There may be some cord remaining, but it will fall off before long.
A dog's gestation is 63 days, though your new mother may be a bit shorter than that. If she goes past this date, I would take her to the vet.
There are many, many good books about dog breeding out there. I suggest you purchase one to ensure you give your dog the best care throughout and after her pregnancy. Nutrition and socialization of the pups is important. Even if you're not planning on breeding in the future, there will also be important information on everyday maintenance and dog health. Good luck to you and enjoy your new additions!

With all due respect, you should research about this before breeding your Yorkies. I have a male yorkie and there is a very helpful forum for all Yorkie lovers. The website is www.yorkietalk.com and just go into their forums. There are a lot of different sections and if your question is specific most likely you will receive a reply. I don't want to discourage you because I've seen this happen a lot but some of the veteran members of that website like to "lecture" when someone posts about something that should've been researched before. But I'm sure that you will receive helpful replies also. Just check it out and you can always go back there if you ever have any other questions about your yorkie.

The gestation period for all dogs is nine weeks. If you don't know much about breeding you should go to a vet. There are many complications that could arise outside of the mom eating through the cord. Your dog could die or the puppies during child birth - so make sure you have the number and directions to an emergency vets. Also you could get her spayed and abort the pregnancy or wait until she has the baby or babies and have her spayed. Although it is fun and exciting to watch your dog give birth and then raise a little puppy (that will need lots of shots, deworming, checkups) it's not really fair to let the mom, especially one that little, to keep having babies.

Gestation (on average) runs 58-63 days. How far along is she?

I don't think Lori's answer was harsh at all. Homework and research needs to be done LONG BEFORE even thinking of breeding.

There are 2 things I would recommend:

1. Have someone with experience whelping pups on stand-by. Your dog will more than likely whelp in the middle of the night, so make sure it is someone you know you'll be able to get there at any time day or night.

2. Make arrangements with your vet to have her at their office at day 58, and leave her in their care until the pups are whelped. A vet's office with a good Head vet-tech will take her home with her to monitor the dog. And if a problem arises, she's in good hands with someone who knows what they're doing.

Maybe give her a little time and her actions will tell you what her name should be. I like different names. You could look on baby names web-sites, there are tons of funky names there. I like Zoey for a dog with lots of energy, it means life. Just stay away from Molly, Buddy, and Lola because they are nice but all very overused names. If you call out Buddy at a dog park every dog will come running.

Generally, dogs are pregnant for 56 to 60 days.
When in labor,
* Pre-pare box with newpaper in it.
* Leave dog alone
* If anything goes wrong, call vet, but leave dog alone.
Don't EVER pull the puppy out!!
* Keep dog comfortable!

Lori R's answer was a bit harsh. You should speak to your vet about this but don't worry yourself. When the time comes don't interfer let her get on with it, if she seems to be struggling ring your vet.

Talk to your VET!!!

Honest to God, is this a serious question???

If the only place you seek advice from is this forum, with so many bad answers combined with truly good answers (and can you REALLY tell bad from good answers???)...I truly pity your dog.

Get true advice from a licensed professional...YOUR VET!!!

You can also seek advice in your library, from Yorkie specific sites...but to ask advice with the question you asked here...

I pity your dog and can only pray she survives.
