Because strangers who IM you out of the blue generally want to:
1) cyber with you, and they're generally sickos to boot
2) rip you off
or
3) hack your system

I think it is a protection, for both male and females. We really don't know who is on the side, or what their intentions are. You can not base a person on the way their avatars look; strangely I look quite a bit like mine, or any other pic they choose to represent them. The net is not a good place to meet someone. You are better off with out the extra chatting.

The fact that I am willing to try to help someone with their issues does not mean that I am willing to have perfect strangers interrupt me while I am doing something else on my computer.

What are the messages you are sending them? It must be very nasty.... If you send good and nice messages...of course who won't care to answer you... but there are those who don't answer ypu because he/she is focused to his/her current chatmate online....Its rattles to chat with many persons.Me too, i dont like to chat with several persons at a time.

Because from what i hear from my female friends off of here.. they get tons of email from perverted guys off here and thats why they don't want IM's
I don't allow IM because i always just get stupid messages.
