Muslim sisters in non-Muslim countries, this question is for you: How are you treated/judged for your hijab?

by the general public, the people at your workplace,school, mall, restaurants, etc.

I'm generally treated with an unusually high level of respect by people I deal with daily or frequently, but sometimes I get strange looks or rude comments from anonymous strangers. If I catch the eye of someone giving me a strange look, I smile at them and say hello, and usually they smile back. Most of the rude commenters are of the "hit and run" type, but I've had a few opportunities to reply back well, honestly, and politely, and they've changed their tone, at least toward me.

At my sons' schools, the teachers all recognize me as a Muslim and make sure they ask about any dietary or holiday restrictions, and at every place I've worked since becoming Muslim they've asked if I need any special accomodations to meet the requirements of my religion.

I live in Brooklyn, NY in a very Muslim community where the women wear hijab and azaan is heard five times a day. I feel that non Muslim countries like America, respect Islam much more than we Muslims respect other religions. I sometimes feel ashamed of how we treat Jews, Christians and non-believers. A person of another religion, as you know, has no place in an Islamic country. Is discrimination a divine concept in Islam?

Maybe it's interesting that I see other Muslims laughing at people who have hijab ! They ARE Muslims but they only carry the name!
You can work, Go to University or on the whole be yourself and don't care for what people say.
Of course in some countries like France it's so hard.but in the US no one cares for people's appearance.( only when U want to find a job, they will despair you.)

asalaam laikom rahmantuAllah wabaraketu (if u are Muslim) well. most ppl towards me are more curious. they ask me where I'm from and sometimes ask me about Islam... of course i am more than happy to tell them and im impressed that they show interest. on other term. "Hezbollah", a terrorist organization over seas, has been shouted at me. don't let me forget to mention there are a ton of *$^holes that come on this site and are very prejudice. y becuz that's what they've been taught. too hate every Muslim becuz their in war with us. i pray for them. so i guess it goes both ways. it's a love/hate situation

actually it all started after 9/11. before that no body ever take this issue seriously.
I think muslim women living in western countries should obey their law. If their law wants not to have a hijab. they should follow their law. its same like in saudi arabia, where a woman is not allowed to go outside alone, or without full covered hijab. so how u crticise western countries for their law?
If somebody dont agree with this law they should move to any country where they can live according to their own wishes.

I was in a muslim country last year and i saw them very comfortable with their hijab...they even looked to have more confident than the ladies with too much make up...They just believe what they do ....real believers i think.
hey somehow i found them very pretty too in veil.

my country is a muslim country so we wear hijab and all people in the country treated us kindly because they are muslims too :)

why? Do you think people don't respect people for who they are, not what they wear or where they worship god. Its you muslims who do that.
