Bring some books and DVDs. I spent 2 weeks last year and 3 weeks this year in a small farming village in nearby Nong Bualumphu and there was not much to do. We did not have a car which limited our options some. Family members occasionally drove us around to some temples and parks.

The men enjoy fishing and drinking and you will probably be welcome. There are some temples and nice state and national parks worth visiting. Picking bamboo and mushrooms, family picnics, just go along and learn.

You will probably have the opportunity to try new and different Isaan food. I ate beetles, crickets, ants, frogs, several mystery vegetables and some recognizable food prepared quite differently. I passed on the raw pork, the live fresh water shrimp and the grilled toads.

It surprised me to find that although I am a well educated professional, I know almost nothing that is useful in that environment.

Be adaptable, considerate and enjoy.

Are you travellingfrom Bangkok or are you flying into Udon? If travelling from Bangkok, you will pass through quite a few scenic places along the way. Like Khao Yai Nature Reserve, Phanon Rung in Surin, etc.

Over in Udon, archaelogical sites are the key attractions. Enjoy.
