Most wedding dresses can be altered so that no one knows it didn't fit you before. Good luck on the weight loss, and it's a good thing you bought the dress to fit you at your current weight. Too many people buy it to fit them if the lose weight then find they eat from nerves the month before the wedding and gain the weight back.

Altering the dress shouldn't be a problem...like most alterations, though, there is a certain point where they can't do anymore and you'll have to get another dress. When you alter the waist in your pants, you can do no more than 5 inches...dresses are the same way. After 5 inches, you'd might as well buy a new dress...talk to the bridal shop and see what the restrictions are so that you don't waste money for another dress.

Hey there,
No worries, I did the exact same thing. I bought my dress near the end of September, and my wedding isn't until next September. It's going to take near six to eight months to come in though. So I felt that I would order the dress in the size that I am in right now, and if hopefully I lose a little bit more weight, it can be altered for a price, then so be it. It'll be great. If not, at least I haven't bought it in a smaller size and screw myself over! There is a seamstress who works in the store that I bought my dress from, so it'll be convienent.
Good luck :)

If you bought the dress at a bridal shop alteration are free or included in the price. Take the dress and the receipt back to the shop and ask them to make alterations.

It depends on the dress, the number of sizes, and the skill of the seamstress. The safest thing to do would be to exchange it for one it a size or so down if possible. Altering more than a size can cause dresses to look funny, especially if there is any kind of patterning on it. Good luck!

No it isn't a problem at all. Altering it is easy if you get the right Person to do it. August comes around really quick so you better start getting a lot of things booked and done. I speak from experience I work in the wedding industry. I work with brides daily and they start getting everything booked a year to six months prior to wedding don't wait till the last min.

For an experienced seamstress, reducing the size won,t be a problem. However if you gain weight instead of losing it, matching up fabric to increase the size, can be a problem.
Congratulations for your future wedding.

I did the same thing. It shouldn't be a problem. I have been reassured that its alot easier to take a dress down a few sizes then to let it out.

It's easier to alter a gown down than up. That being said, you have to find a seamstress who can handle beads and sequins. You can't just go to the local dry cleaner.
