Nocturnal muscle cramps are a fairly common enough complaint that most people suffer from at one time or another. It doesn't necessarily mean there is anything wrong with you, in fact most folks who have them don't have anything else troubling them. They are sometimes associated with excessive fatigue, after strenuous activty that you are unused to, or drinking. People who take diuretics to help regulate blood pressure often complain about leg cramps, and this is due to being slightly dehydrated and having a lower potassium level in the blood. When your calf muscles cramp, flex your foot up (toes to ceiling) and hold until the cramping stops. Apply heat to cramping muscles and massage them. Make sure you eat plenty of potassium rich foods - (bananas, tomatoes, potatoes, broccoli, cantaloupe, oranges, grapefruit), and drink plenty of water. It might also help to check your shoes, if you spend a great deal of time on your feet. You may need an arch support, or some pads inside your shoes to cushion your feet. If you sit for long periods of time, you might benefit from periodic stretching of the legs, pointing the toes downward and rotating the foot to increase the circulation and relieve the muscle tension. For the pain afterwards, Ibuprofen- Motrin, by generic name, aspirin,or Tylenol will help. Motrin has muscle relaxant properties in particular, and helps with inflammation. With luck the problem will pass as quickly as it came. It usually does, especially if you take care of the things I mentioned. Meantime, don't worry about it much. It's irritating, and painful, and it does disrupt sleep- but otherwise it doesn't mean anything is terribly wrong with you, certainly nothing worth losing even more sleep over.

Is the weather warmer where you are? Sometimes cramps can be caused by simple loss of body fluids and salts. I suffer from severe cramps and I get a prescription drug from my doctor. There are some good over the counter minerals that will help though. A combination of magnesium and calcium helps cramps and also add extra potassium to your diet. Bananas are a good source of natural potassium and they're yummy too!

This is most likely caused by a lack of potassium. Try eating a banana a day for a week and see if it goes away (or take a supplement.) If not, maybe see a doctor. If so, continue with the bananas or potassium.

You definitely need to drink more water, hardly anyone hydrates themselves enough. Potassium is also important for the muscles. I hope this is all that is wrong, if you have a bad feeling then go to the doctor to make sure you haven't pulled or torn
anything.
