I'm writing a paper on Hinduism for my religion class and one of the subjects that I have to analyze is what Hindus believe people really want. I'd really like to hear from people who actually practice the religion Hinduism rather than solely read it from a book. Thanks so much!

I am a Hindu and I practise the vedic religion. There are various schools of thought and all are accepted by different groups.
Ultimately it is the variation of the one principle that God is one.
All groups aim at achieving release from birth and death cycle.
The method of approach varies. The cycle of birth and death which are very painful comes out of ones own attachments to worldly possessions. It can be family, wealth, power, prestige, education, name, fame etc. The advise given is get release from these attachments as they are ephemeral. Get attached to god who is eternal bliss or "satchitananda"(SAT CHIT ANANDA)
SAT is the truth CHIT is cosmic consciousness, and ANANDA is unending bliss.
several methods are given to attain that truly happy state and each individual is free to choose his own path. There are no compulsions like other religions which is the greatest quality of Hinduism

I am a Hindu here, and I believe that all we people really want is a place in heaven...For that, we know that we have to do only good work. And many of us do it...though hinduism is degrading nowadays, this is what our goal is(for those who practice Hinduism seriously). A place in heaven, for me, is a reason for doing work for good causes. Thus, directly or indirectly, we want to do only good work.

People want to avoid pain, and painful circumstances.

Proof: Why do people make major changes in their lives?
Not to improve their situation; Rather people make changes to escape from conditions they consider intolerable.

Examples: Divorce, Buying a new car (you must first criticize your present car, then and only then can you convince yourself to buy a new car.)
