You'll be fine. I've lived in NYC all my life, I am a 26 year old girl, nothing has ever happened to me or any of my friends and we ride the subways at all hours. It's very safe. Lots of cops, lots of people always around at all hours of the night, lots of cameras. You might see a flasher, but that's about it. Just don't stare at anyone, read a book, act like you dont care, arent afraid, etc. Youll be fine/

Make sure you know which subway line you need to ride, ask a subway attendant, or get a Subway Map. Never sit in a subway car by yourself, especially at night. Don't be occupied with reading a newspaper, magazine, etc. If possible, sit next to a woman with a baby or child, or, an old person. Keep your eyes on your purse and packages. Don't carry a lot of pacakges with you. Be aware of your surroundings. Get off at the correct subway stop.

Get some pepper spray. You can hold it while keeping your hand in your pocket. Sometimes I hold it up in my sleeve if I'm really nervous about something. Stay near other people. Try not to be the only person in the subway car if possible. Just avoid people that are acting strange like you would anywhere else and don't let them catch you staring at them or they might try to talk to you. Bring a book so that you look busy. Don't get off the train in a bad neighborhood unless you really have no choice.

Yes, the conductor. Despite what some (uninformed) people on here think, New York is a very safe place.
However, no place, (not even a cowtown in the middle of nowhere) is 100% safe. So, if you're riding the subway late at night it's always best to sit in the conductor's car at the middle of the train. He or she will keep an eye on you.

The subways are safe 24/7
There are video cameras everywere.
If you feel unsafe, ride in the first car on the train, where the driver is.

Don't get caught alone in the subway, make sure you are with the crowd if you can. Stand or sit up straight and try and look very attentive and aware. Don't make yourself look tired or like a victim and you won't be one.
