You make it sound like you had this formal "date" dinner planned and your man just brought his friend along....was it a formal date or were you just hangin out or getting a bite to eat or something somewhere?

He might not be in the dating mentality. I think dating would be more fun for like longer-term and married couples....as a way to get to know someone, formal dating is a horribly artificial, shallow and contrived environment to do it in!

My husband says that he is insecure about himself and needs someone familar to start conversation. His comfort zone is in people he already knows and trusts, My husband's suggestion is to be a friend to him first and let it go from there. If he is nothing more than a friend then you have gained that. If it becomes more then it started out as a good friendship. which means it may be a longer lasting love relationship

I don't know. It depends. Is this one of the FIRST dates??
If so, he may be too shy to be alone with you... who knows.
Maybe he wants to make it a casual date.
Maybe he also wants you to get to know his best friend and get acquianted with him as well.

My boyfriend brings his friends along when we hang out.
It's not a problem.
I take it as a compliment because he wants his friends to meet his girlfriend. : } Take it as a good sign.

If he's doing this a lot to the point where you don't have any alone time, let him know that.

Sounds like he's taking someone else along so he won't be so nervous and if the conversation or date doesn't go well he can always turn and talk to his friend to keep from being so nervous.

True friends share the pleasure in common.

Sounds awkward and out of place. I'd ask why, then move on form there.
