Okay, a crate is for when the dog is not in contact with you. Normally, you're sitting around on the couch, you keep an eye on him and go outside about once every half hour to encourage him to go potty outside. The crate is for night. You put the crate in your room and the puppy in the crate. When the puppy has to go potty, he scratches on the door of the crate, waking you. You open the crate door (pay attention-this is a very important point), grab the puppy and take him outside, only setting him down when he is on the grass. If you just open the door, he will step from the crate and pee on your carpet/floor. When he wakes up, no matter where he is, he is going to have to pee. Make sure you don't ignore him. The crate can be used for day time while you are at work BUT ONLY if someone is going to drop by every couple of hours to take him out for potty. Puppies generally can't hold it for 9-10 hours at a time! Remember, he's just a baby. And remember not to make the crate too big. If it is too big, some dogs will go potty inside of it. It has to be just big enough for him to sleep.

I have a four month historic Pomeranian (I actually have a two 12 months historic Chihuahua and a two.five 12 months historic Japanese Spitz) and that i began off utilizing the potty pads!! I set them beside my again door so he went there to visit the bathroom. When i noticed him heading over there i could open the again door and allow him out. Now he simply is going and waits on the again door until i open it for him, now not extra potty pads.

it may be time consuming but its worth it.
Everytime he comes out of that crate he goes straight outside to the potty area.
When he's out of the crate take him to the potty area every 10 - 15 minutes or so or untill he starts sniffing the ground and circling.
Also while in the crate take him out every two hours.
We did this for my Labrodor Retreiver puppy and she was trained in less than 2 months.

Great answer from Gail S. I've had 3 dogs for which I crate trained. They view the crate as a den, their safe-haven. But puppies need to be taken outside every time they eat, drink, sleep, play, etc. Praise, praise, praise when your puppy does his job outside!!!! Tell him how good he is, rub him generously, and he'll do it just for the satisfaction of pleasing you!

Enjoy your puppy, as they grow up so fast! : )

I paper trained my 12 week old Bichonpoo and what I did is kept her on a collar and leash and had the leash attached to my belt when she was not in her pen. I allowed her off leash when I was intently watching her. As soon as I saw her start to circle as though she were preparing to go I would put her on the wee wee pad. In 2 weeks I have her completely trained.

Howdy - if you are home to supervise your puppy the crate is your best option. You'll have your little poop mobile potty trained in no time.

Check out this crate training article for some tips - http://www.dog-obedience-training-review.com/puppy-crate-training.html

Good luck with it.

A crate is great to utilize for potty training. Give your puppy plenty of play breaks and take your puppy out regularly. Take the puppy outside to potty as soon as you take him out of the crate and just before putting him back in. it takes time for a puppy to learn to control their bladder or be able to. I took mine out about every two-three hrs at first and praised them when they used the bathroom outside. I also took them to the same area outdoors. During the night I did not take her out every two hrs but put her water up a few hrs before her last potty, making sure to take her first thing in the morning. Sooner if there was an indication that the pup needed to go potty.
Then after a week I started taking her out every three then four hrs. Then longer.
As far as the crate goes, it should be big enough to stand in and turn around for the dog, but not much bigger than that. Don't put a towel or bedding in it as the dog will soil this and push it aside. They don't like to soil their crate when the space is small and no bedding is in it.
Once they are trained you can put bedding in there and of course leave the dog out for longer periods.
If your pup soils the crate, take him out immediately and encourage him to go outside in his usual area. Even if they don't have to go, they will sort of squat because they know that is what you are waiting for after awhile and then praise them for that. Clean the soiled crate thoroughly any time there is an accident or they can get used to sleeping in a soiled crate and you have defeated the purpose.
As adults, my dogs get three potty breaks a day, morning, late afternoon and before bed unless they occasionally nudge me and need to go more. I have three dogs and used crates to train them not only to deter development of destructive habits but for potty training. I leave one crate open now that the middle dog likes to sleep in, with the door open. I use that same crate for the youngest dog when I go somewhere for hrs. I live in an apartment and it is clean. They have lots of toys, lots of outdoor play and walks as well as runs and they don't tear things up or fight. Well trained dogs are happy dogs! GL with yours.

when you use a crait, you must put the pup in it when it messes where it is not supposed to...that is after you take it out to let it know it is supposed to go outside.... crait training is one of the Most effective ways for a dog to train...Just remember...never Hit your dog for making mistakes...Firmly tell them NO! and put them in their cage...And be sure to reward GREATLY when they have done right...Dogs respond well to A-lot of praise... when I trained my maltese, everytime she wet or messed outside, i would love on her and just give her all kinds of praise and she was trained in a matter of 2 weeks...But it is a constant dedication to getting them outside and letting them know who is in charge.....
