When I open my mouth and tighten the muscles around my cheeks, they start twitching a lot... I know I have TMJ and clench my teeth at night, is this related? Or something I should be worried about?

When I open my mouth and tighten the muscles around my cheeks (like an open faced smile), they start twitching a lot... I know I have TMJ and clench my teeth at night, is this related? Or something I should be worried about?

Also, occassionally, half of my tongue will go numb a bit... Actually, I started getting nerve pain in my teeth, but since I've tried a night guard for clenching, that's gotten better.

Difficult to get night guard made if u hv upper & lower fixed braces on. Americans usually call Temporo-Mandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome "TMJ" - it's just a generic term for a collection of symptoms of unknown cause although nighttime grinding/clenching is a factor of many patients. Try Advil 200mg at bedtime for 3 or 4 nights?

Yes the two are related the mucsles in yo cheeks are just tired from contracting when you clench, wear your mouth guard and massge your cheeks before you go to bed thats what helps me to relax my face since i clench too and make sure you drink enough milk becuase this prevents muscle spasms

No, twitching and clenching of teeth are in no way related. But I would suggest you to consider consulting some Oral and maxillofacial surgeon in this regard. Secondly, you need to learn ABC of stress management. Please take life one day at a time..take it easy !!

THERE IS A TYPE OF NIGHTGUARD YOU CAN WEAR WHICH PREVENTS YOU FROM BITING DOWNALL THE WAY AND THUS CAUSING CLENCHING. IT IS USUALLY WORN WHILE YOU SLEEP BUT MAY ALSO BE WORN AT DAYTIME TO PREVENT BITING DOWN INADVERTANTLY.
SEE YOUR DENTIST
