i would like to know about codecin media player? and why some .avi files will not play on win media player?

Window media player does not have the MPEG-2 codec and a dvd decoder in it. either you have to install another dvd player such as Intervideo home theatre, or power dvd etc. These softwares often are given away in a software cd that comes with the computer or the dvd drive; Once you install one of these, windows media player will play DVDs Or There are some dvd decoder plugins given on microsoft's website below.

each type of media file is compressed by different format like mpeg, avi, qt, mov etc.. Codec is form of COMpression, DECompression, means each is file is compressed by that format and also required when we goes to decompress(means when you play) it. So u can understand it by this line>>here is only one key for lock and unlock the door. And *.avi is also a compression format so avi decompressor is required for play it. That's what are codec packs(ex: klite codec Mega pack) gives us. Its the package of compressor and decompressor. So now you need to Upgrade your media Player and Download and install a codec pack.

You've got a couple of options. You could download and install a codec pack, such as K-Lite Codec Pack (This is the one that I use, and I haven't found a file that it won't play ... yet. The latest version is 2.79) from http://free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm or download another video player that has the codecs already installed.
