Slavery in the bible

What does the Bible say about beating slaves? It says you can beat both male and female slaves with a rod so hard that as long as they don't die right away you are cleared of any wrong doing.

When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. (Exodus 21:20-21 NAB)

You would think that Jesus and the New Testament would have a different view of slavery, but slavery is still approved of in the New Testament, as the following passages show.

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. (Ephesians 6:5 NLT)

Well I suppose it's time for a history listen. Black people have had slaves. Black people sold other black people into slavery. There have also been white slaves. There have been asian slaves. Black people have been slaves AND BLACK PEOPLE HAVE OWNED SLAVES. White people have owned slaves AND WHITE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SLAVES. So why do you ignore ALL this so that you can just hate white americans and talk about us like we're evil people or something?

The only flaw with your question is that you're using the word slave in our language and with our meaning... The word "slave" that you think of is what you heard of in history class, but when you look at the word used in the bible when it was written it can more accurately be translated into a more commonplace word today, "employee". Slaves in the bible were not shackled in chains with no freedoms, they went home at night, lived with their family and they were even allowed a certain number of days off within a calander year. That sounds like an employee more than a "slave" as you know it. The reason there are stipulations on correcting slaves is because physical abuse is how everything was delt with. Kids acting up, not paying taxes, rude comments, and immoral behavior. All of those were punished physically. Anyway, investigate these on your own, but know the meanings of the words used.

In general, the first Christians were Jewish. The Jews didn't oppress the blacks that I know of. Then some of the first believers were black (Simon, also called the black, came from Northern Africa). Then people from Syria, Egypt, Turkey, and Europe... Christian beliefs certainly did not originate in Europeans!
There have been many European atheists. Does that mean that a black atheist is taking on the belief of his ancestors' oppressors?

It's not proof of anything. They believe Jesus is the Son of God and you don't. Why don't you ask the same thing about the Muslims. They were raiding sub-Sharan Africa for a 1000 years before the white man came. They also had millions of white slaves that the captured from Europe and the middle east. Still blacks become Muslim. I think you simply have a hatred for whites and especially for Jesus, whatever color he was.
