Canned foods can also be stored without refrigeration. In days before ramen, it was Campbells soups, etc.

Campbell's tomato soup and mushroom soups were a staple item that housewives used to make many easy dishes. My parents bought Campbell's vegetable beef and vegetarian vegetable soup by the case for us because both worked while the kids were home alone.
