My chihuahua had 7 puppies but all were given away after two months.... and I never got to see how they would treat each other as adults.... she was a great mom and she took very good care of them and always played with them... but she did get angry and try to bite a one puppy when she tried to eat her food.

So would they have remained very close and got along like friends or would she always be a mom trying to take care of them and protect them? Whenever another dog came close, she would get between them and growl protecting her children.

At some point, the mother dog would begin to wean the puppies. She would become less tollerant of them and snap or growl when they tried to nurse. Once completely weaned, the puppies would be more independent and spend most of their time away from her as a "pack" of puppies.

Some friends of mine's Jack Russell Terrier had a litter. They ended up keeping all four of the puppies to adulthood. The puppies were not as people-friendly as they could have been because they bonded with their litter mates instead of their human caretakers.

I have a rescue cocker spaniel that was taken away from her mother at too young an age. She has always been afraid of other dogs and will cower behind me when confronted with one.

The idea of sending the puppies to new homes between 8 and 10 weeks is designed to strike a balance. Before leaving, the puppies learn from their mother and litter mates how to act like and get along with other dogs. After leaving, they learn how to be a safe & happy member of a human family.
