I think you can upgrade but not delete. The upgrade is usually cheaper.

You cannot upgrade from win 98 to Win XP! What you can do is to save your files that you want to keep on another storage media, like a CD or an external hard drive or any other storage media so that you can transfer them back to your computer when you install windows XP.
Now, how you do it? You have two choices, the first and the one I recommend, is to go buy the Windows you want and take your PC to a shop so they install it for you.
The other is to do it your self but if you are not up to par with computers, don't try it; you may create bigger and more expensive problems for yourself.
Having Windows 98 tells me that your machine is old and if so, the possibility exists that your existing hardware could not be suitable to handle Windows XP. And, if this is the case, it would cost much more to upgrade than to get a new machine.
Hope this helps you

Stick the Windows XP Upgrade CDROM in the drive and follow the directions on the screen. It is pretty easy, just make sure:
1) Your PC has the RECOMMENDED CPU speed, memory, and hard disk space listed on the box. Don't install if you are just at the Minimum values.
2) You have a copy of your WIndows 98 O/S diskettes handy. The XP upgrade edition will ask you for the old diskettes or CD to make sure you are entitled to an upgrade because you have the Win98.

You should buy the upgrade XP and save $100.00. XP upgrade and the complete install XP are exactly the same. Simply put the XP upgrade in your cdrom or dvd drive. It will begin to install XP. It will search for previous Microsoft operating system. If it sees your win98, then it will continue to install. If not, simply take out the XP and put your win98 cd in the cdrom drive or dvd drive for a second. When it recognizes the win98 on your cd, then take out the 98 and put XP back in. When it asks you if you want to do the complete format, the answer is YES. The complete one. Then your FAT 32 will be expunged and NTFS will be installed. Now XP can finish installing. You really need a bios with at least a 2000 date. You will need about 11,000 megs, minimum, for XP and recommended programs. You will need at least 512 mgs of RAM. That may be Greek to you, but your computer needs to be at least newer than 2000 to be able to utilize XP fully. Good luck.

First make d@mn sure your computer has enough speed and memory to run XP. It takes a LOT more space than 98 does!
If you want to completely wipe out your hard drive and do a clean install, there should be instructions that would come with the XP software you buy.
Otherwise, there IS a way to go into DOS and format the hard drive and install XP straight from the C: prompt.

Don't do it, you will end up spending more money for upgrading your system, than if you bought a new computer. I was going to do the same thing, and it was not worth it, then you won't know if it is going to work right anyway. I checked around, and got a cheap computer, from staples for $400.00 after all the rebates etc, and got $100.00 of at the cash register. It has a dvd burner, and many other features, you would not get, just by upgrading, and you have a new computer..

Start up your windows 98 computer and enter the bios setup screen and change the boot order so that CD is the first option. Then once your computer is booted insert the windows xp cd then shut down your computer. Restart the computer allow the computer to boot to the windows xp cd and the installation process will start.

the main thing you will have to find out is if your computer can handle xp if it can all you have to do is buy the disc pack and put it into your cd drive and follow the directions. if you dont know if it can handle xp then check the box or http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/evaluation/sysreqs.mspx to get the system requirements for windows xp. then go to http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html and download this follow the instructions and then it will take a scan of your computer. all you have to do is compare the two systems. if the numbers on the belarc system are better than the ones on microsoft then you can run it. if you need any other help then email me at cj_gandalf_13@yahoo.com.

You should not upgrade. It is always better to do a fresh install. XP runs best with at least a 1 ghz processor and 256 of Ram. Put your CD in, reboot, go into BIOS and make sure your Cd-Rom boots before you Hard Drive, save changes, boot from CD rom, delete old partition, create new partition, install XP with NTFS.

You cannot simply uninstall Win98 and install WinXP. You must first run the "Windows Upgrade Advisor" which will examine your PC and let you know if it is possible.
I have a Pentium III and after running the advisor, was told my present system could not handle it.
You can download the advisor at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/advisor.mspx
