When I try to use System Restore in XP, I click a date, but it tells me I cannot restore. How do I fix this?
A:
So, you're trying to use the XP System Restore feature, but get the message: "Cannot restore the computer to an earlier restore point, no changes have been made to your computer." Am I right? Well, I can't tell you how to get your old restore points back, but I can tell you how to fix this problem so you can use them in the future.
Right click on the My Computer icon, choose Properties, then click on the System Restore tab.
Put a check in the box for "Disable Restore on all drives." Click OK and reboot your computer
After you reboot, go back to the System Restore tab and uncheck the box. Click OK.
Next, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and then click System Restore. Choose Create a Restore Point and give it a name like Reset as a reminder.
Now, go ahead and try to use the restore again, using the new point and it should work properly for you this time.
Just in case you're not even sure how to use the System Restore option in Windows XP, read here before you complete this tip
It has helped someone before good luck

Well, this may sound dumb, but are you choosing dates that are DARK numbers on the calendar shown? You can only pick dates to 'go back to' that are in bold, because the computer has saved all of the info on THESE dates as a restore point.

Restore can be great and it can be a great big failure.
I tried to use it the other day and it haung for ages half way through. I got fed-up and switched off.
Result was I could not boot up again and had to take the PC to the shop to get it sorted......So beware.

I think to solve your question we need to know why you are restoring your pc to a backup file whether if it is because of disk failure, corruption, virus, spyware or whatever. Besides the fact that your restore points/files may be corrupt you could also have a malicious program that is preventing you from restoring. More info please.

Reboot computer into safe mode. Continually press F8 when you reboot your computer. It will give you the option to boot into safe mode. Then try it from there.
