When you invent something, you create something. When you discover something, you find or observe something that was already present, but others did not see it or understand it.

An invention is a man-made product, it is something that does not already occur in nature.

A discovery is something that has akways existed (or for an extremely long time) and mankind has finally found it.

Electricity for example is a discovery - it hasnot been invented - it has been around in the form of lightning, electric eels and so on WAAAAY before humans ever evloved.

The generator though - which MAKES electricity, IS an invention as generators are not found naturally occuring in nature.

Inventions: TV, telephone, radio, light bulb, spectacles
Discoveries: Electricity, gravity, radiation, America - lol

hope that helps a little

An invention is something a person or group of people create, it wouldnt have exsisted if it wasn't invented. A discovery is found. Through reasearch, accidently whatever, it would continue to exsist even if it wasn't discovered. For example a planet or star exsists regardless of whether or not we can see it, or discover it. A washing machine wouldn't have esisted unless someone thought it up and invented it. Thats the way I see it anyway :)

By definition

Invention: U.S. Patent Law. a new, useful process, machine, improvement, etc., that did not exist previously and that is recognized as the product of some unique intuition or genius, as distinguished from ordinary mechanical skill or craftsmanship

Discovery: the act or an instance of discovering

You could say there is a newly discovered invention called the "FloBee" hiting the United States. But if you are merely talking about Discovery as a find, then there is the difference described in the definitions.

You can discover a cave in the forest, or a new route to get
someplace. To invent something that actually works or is
useful to a large number of people requires genius. Most useful
things have already been invented and have patents.
