He is very much full of crap. I was in the Navy for 4 years and went to the Persian Gulf for 8 months. I still don't boost myself up to the level of the guys who are actually over there in the serious combat. Your ex is a total loser. If he were a real man, he would humble himself just a tad and think about the guy who might be over there in his place.

If he served his country during a time of war (post 9/11) he technically is a Veteran. He doesn't sound like he has a ton of experience fighting in combat. He is probably talking himself up a bit because he got out so early for medical reasons. This happens a lot in the military but most people don't go around bragging about it. He needs to calm down with playing up his service.

Technically, any person who volunteers to serve in the armed forces is a vet. There is a difference between a vet and a combat vet, however.
Those of us that are combat vets have seen things that no one ever should. It scars you. And sometimes scares you too.
We have all heard this, but you can never truly understand it until you have lived it.
That said, anyone who has served in the military (even the gaurdies and coasties) should be proud of their service. If they are blessed to serve in peace, all the better. I do not begrudge those that do not bleed in their service, nor do I hold to a higher level those who have, save those with a MOH. We all hold that to the highest of reguard.
We are all vets, we have all answered the call, and our nation is better for us, despite the politicians that always muck it up and get us into wars. Regardless of political party.
So, if your ex wants to exploit his service, for what ever the reason, it is his prerogative to do so.

I've been told I'm a vet, but I don't think so. The people I really consider to be truly veterans are the people who have served in wartime conditions. My grandfather was a vet. He served in WW II, Korea, and was an advisor to the South Vietnamese in Vietnam. My mother still has the 'wanted' poster with his picture drawn on it that the North Vietnamese put out for his murder. Luckily, they never got him, although he had some close calls.
So, to all the 'real' vets out there, thanks for your service.

8 months? that's about long enough to go thru basic training and maybe some "A" school. Your reaction is probably correct.
