She's obviously slowed down over the past couple years, but right now, for the past 12 hours or so, she's been just lying around, and when you hold her close, you feel her shake every time she inhales.
Her exhales are smooth.
Anything I can do to make her feel better? Is this something they do before they die?
thanks

I hate these questions. Yes she may be....has she been to a vet because 12 is young for her to die. Keep her around you and love on her the best you can. Do not try to force her to eat or drink if she does not want to. I still insist she is too young to die for her age. Please take her to a vet. She could have a cold or infection in her lungs. Again, I hate these questions because we never get to know if your dog ends up OK. My thoughts are with you...

Wow, this is a heavy question! Have you taken her to see a Vet? What exactly do you mean by slowing down over the years? The reason I ask is that it is not uncommon for the smaller breed dogs to live to be 16-18 years old, where as the large breeds usually to 12-14yrs.
Is she eating and drinking water? Try keeping her warm, but I would suggest a visit to the Vets office
good luck

The average life expectancy of a Yorkie is 12-15 years so it may be time.
I would take her to the vet because if she is shaking and having trouble inhaling, it may be something you can cure with medication.
Remember, she has lived a long, happy life and if the treatment may be costly or hard on her old body, the kindest thing to do for her would be euthanasia and see her happy and calm with her owner by her side when she goes. That would be what she would want.

Get off the computer and call your vet ASAP. If your vet is closed take her to the emergency vet ASAP. This doesn't sound good. The best thing you can do for her is get her to the vet ask them what is wrong not a bunch of people on the computer. I know many people that have had Yorkies for longer than 12 years.

Take her to a vet ASAP- the fact that she exhales normally or smooth is a good sign. The fact she is having trouble inhaling means she could have fluid in her lungs or pneumonia or could have congestive heart failure WHICH ARE ALL TREATABLE WITH MEDICATIONS--- CALL THE VET --- GO IMMEDIATELY- TIME IS IMPORTANT TO SAVE HER- SHE IS NOT TOO OLD

you need to get her to a vet, she could have a upper respiratory infection or she could have either tracheal collapse (the trachea collapases and causes breathing problems and can cause them to shake because of being frightened because of not being able to breath well) or decreased lung capacity, both are very common in smaller breeds like the yorkie.

Sorry to hear about your yorkie--Sounds like she has lived a long happy life with you-As for what is going on Im not sure--Check her gums for color--Is she breathing ok other then the shaking--Maybe she is just tired and needs to rest--Is the shaking in her chest or just shaking like she is cold? My best advise would be to take her to your vet as soon as you can--If she is breathing ok and her color looks good It could be something simple to take care of--Best of luck to you both

maybe because 12 years old is the time that she is getting old, getting tierd all of a sudden and they do shake. She might be scared too like you.

Take her to the vet pronto this could be serious! Hope I helped! Also if her nose is wet and cold she's fine but if her nose is warm and dry she could be sick. Give her lots of love and put her food and water bowls right next to her. Make sure you give her lots of love!
