My husband just bought me a bag of sugar free hard candies. They aren't bad. The problem is I've eaten about half a bag. He comes in and tells me they will make me sick and give me gastro-intestinal trouble. I then read on the back of the bag that they only recommend 1 or 2 servings per day!!! Why doesn't this get printed in huge words on the front???
So my question is will this candy hurt me?
Do I need to take medicine, maybe an anti-diarrheal medicine or Pepto Bismol or something?
What's going to happen to me? I'm nervous because I have to work in the morning.
Thanks for any information. I wasn't sure if I should ask in this forum or the food forum.
Thank you.

Thank you all for the replies. My belly hurts already. I don't know if it's just psychological or a hint of what's to come!!!
The candy has " sucralose" in it.
Don't worry, I'm not eating any more of it tonight.
Maybe I'll just keep the leftovers around for when one of my kids gets plugged up!
Thank you all!

One time I was constipated so I asked my husband to get me some sugar free fudge, because of its effects. I ate the whole pound. It worked so good not only was I having severe stomach (gas) pains, but when I "relieved" myself, it clogged up the toilet.

I stick to fiber, oatmeal and exercise now.

Most sugar free candies have sorbitol, or some other type of stuff in it that can, and will, give you the runs REAL BAD. The best thing to do when getting something new is to read how much is in one serving. And remember, ANY sugar free candy can, and probably will, do this. It won't hurt you other than that, tho. It's a great way to take care of constipation, if you ever have it tho! I used to take care of my ex's grandma who had constipation problems, and it worked wonders! She thought she was sneaking a no-no, when we put it out just for her! lol

Not to worry... Some people have trouble and others don't. Either way you won't get terribly sick because you didn't consume all that much. If you haven't already found yourself "gassy" you'll probably be just fine. And even if you do get a case of the runs it won't last long. You'll go once or twice and that's it. It's not like with the flu or bad food.

Hopefully, you won't have any side effects from the sugar alcohols. I never do.

Since most bags of candy are quite small, around 3 oz., I'm thinking you'll be JUST FINE! :o)

Don't do anything. Don't take Pepto, don't panic and please don't eat any more candy tonight.

Either you get dirrhea or you don't. If you do, it will pass in 2 or 3 hours and then you'll feel better.

Even if you have to work in the morning, you can get through a day at work. You may have to trot to the toilet a couple of times.

After a while, you will develop a sixth sense about how much of this sugar free candy you can eat without developing diarrhea or cramps. Even if you do, it's not that debilitating. It's not like eating too much at Taco Bell, where you feel like your guts have been stabbed.

I love the stuff! My medications give me constipation big time. A few sugar free chocolate turtles and within an hour, I m getting relief. Oh, and I guess it s the loss of all those toxins, but damn! do I feel wonderful afterwards. I mean like I had some heavy duty Valium (though I ve never had a Valium, but I can only imagine what they might be like). I roll around in my bed, moan in sheer bliss and wonder if that feeling could be put into a bottle for sale! :)

No, just stay near the potty for the rest of the night.

BTW, if you're eating sugar free candy for weight loss it's a lie. Look at the ingredients, count all the sugar alcohols carbs and that's what you just ate.

When Atkins began allowing sugar alcohol foods on their diet, that is when people began having problems losing weight on Atkins.

Also check the calories and figure how many servings you had --ouch!

Not long. Sugar free candy contains sugar alcohols, which are known to have a laxative effect.
