50th Anniversary's are hard to buy for, because usually the couple has more than their share of knick knacks, they have a fully furnished home, so they need little.
Give them a gift certificate for a favorite restaurant, or just give them money. If they are having a party, usually a money tree is available for placing money gift on.
If you still would like for them to have a remembrance of you and your gift, why not try a christmas ornament that is engraved with their special wedding day. Every year they look at it they will remember that special 50th day and the one who gave it.

Fifty is golden, so I'd suggest something gold, maybe inexpesive his and her jewelry or a picture frame? Or a gold coin?
What on earth is a return gift?

What is 'return gift'? Don't you want them to keep your gift?

Best Anniversary gift I've ever seen was an album made up of family photos and mementos from their years together.
Not expensive and very much appreciated.
