I am shy and shyness in not a disability, it's just a personality. There is a problem if you are too shy. You could start by participating in Yahoo Answers more often to familiarize yourself with the community and shyness will go away.

First you have to prepare yourself for some uncomfortable moments since you are going out against your nature. Then, you should be yourself. Try to mingle with people you like to be around and join the conversation. Once you find someone with interests compatible with yours, it will be much easier to communicate. Try to act natural and take baby steps until you feel comfortable. After people begin to know your character, and even if they perceive you are shy, you can be one of the group. Friends and acquaintances are made up of all kinds of personalities and that is what makes life interesting. Overcoming shyness is to venture out more and more with people and soon you will have desensitized your shyness.

You never really overcome shyness. I was extremely shy when I was younger. You really have to force yourself to talk to other people. I suggest when you are in a check out line, say hello to the person next to you. Say something about the weather, I know it sounds lame, or ask them about a certain brand they are purchasing. This little bit of small talk will help you deal with it better. It gets a little bit easier with time. By doing this, I was able to run for Phi Beta Lambda president when I went to community college. I got it!!

Just understand that everybody is shy to some extent and we're all people.

BE LOUD it really doesnt help to be quite, just dont be obnoxiously loud.

Everybody feels and if you're a cool person and come off like that to complete strangers they'll warm up to you and you'll be back into your "comfort zone" with the new people in no time.

Being shy has absolutly no up sides, so whats stopping you?

Are you M or F?

The answer will depend on how you proceed.

But consider why you are shy. Personality or some past event. If the latter, then you may need help overcoming some issue which created your condition.

Think that whatever anyone thinks is not important and as if you are the only one around. Trust me, it helps.

Whats the worst that could happen. Everyone pointing a finger and laughing at you, so let them.

Just know one thing. No one is better that you, so don't be scared of anyone. At the same time, no one is worse than you, so don't treat them badly.

It's hard to just 'come out' of being shy--but it's a great sign that you're willing to try.

My goodness, one moment, I have to go disentangle my cat from my cactus. She is not very bright.

Allright, now that that's resolved, let's think about it. Shyness is being afraid of talking to people, and such, right? Well I find that if I can force myself to say the first few words of something, the rest just flows out. Because honestly, you look quite stupid if you say to someone, "Hey, I was wondering," then flush and run away. If you just think to yourself, 'I'm going to say somethign in three, two, one," then just say something, it's quite easy to just keep talking.

Be who you are...don't be too arrogant, be friendly yet stand your ground, and you'll be respected. Maybe try and go out more, without the fear of being judged. I think judgment is the biggest fear. Hang out with people who are similar to you, and those who aren't entirely similar to you.

Gain confidence in yourself. When you love yourself, others will.
