2 seperate motors and two seperate engine families.. the 2.3's family line died in 2001 with the 2.5 liter 4 cyl..... This 2.3 is more inline with the 2.0 in the focus and escape than the older motor.

(that and this one uses a timing chain compared to a timing belt)

Sorry No; The newer 2.3 Duratech is mostly a Mazda.. great motor but totally different than the old engines.

Absolutely not!!!! The two engines you mention, are completely different engines. Just because they have the same displacement, doesn't mean they are the same engine block. That's just like asking if Chevy 3.8L (229 cu. in.) cylinder heads are interchangeable with a Buick 3.8L (231 cu. in.).
