I am not asking about "Code of Conduct" which refers to how you should act, if you are captured by enemy forces.

There are many codes that personnel in the military subscribe to. However, for enlisted, there is no written code of politeness. I cannot attest to the officer corps.

The key to politeness is respect. We all know this. Respect is the one true lesson of basic training. Sure there is a lot of other lessons, but the one that will stay with a recruit is respect. Respect for self and others.

With that respect, comes the natural politeness.

While in uniform, enlisted personnel were always expected to address a civilian as "sir" or "'Mame". This is because, even though we did not directly answer to that individual, they are a part of the population that we served. The US does have a civilian led military after all.

Failure to do so, could be construed as "Conduct Unbecoming the Navy (Marine Corps, Army...) and could be a punishable offense under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

Naval customs, courtesies, and traditions (as well as other services) are, in fact, codified by regulation and law.

will take you to a list of hyperlinks (scroll down below the book advertisements) for all varieties of protocol (i.e. politeness) regulations for the military.

No, for the most, military people are the nicest people ever. They travel and know how to communicate. Most were raised well and love their families, communities. I do not think it is fair to question their politeness at all.

Umm yes... It's taught, from what I understand, in basic training. And to call people in the military a**holes speaks volumes about previous poster. You should thank them that you can say that without getting shot, beheaded, vivisected or at least imprisoned.
