My daughter called me on my cell phone while I was out on the highway in another state 300 miles from her home. How in the world did the call locate me when no one knew where I was?

When you turn your phone on it reports your phone number (registered in your sim card) to the nearest cell tower. From there, your carrier's nation wide network routes your calls similar to how the internet works.

The cell phone has to register with a tower as you move into a new area. The phone will also regularly make contact with the tower to maintain that connection. When you leave one towers coverage there is a handoff which occurs to the next tower. The network always knows where to ring your phone.

If the system did not do that you would not be able to drive around your home town as you are always changing towers. So out of town or in town luckily the entire darn thing just works.

well, that is the advantage of having a cell phone, you can be reached anywhere in the world, as long as your carrier is global..i've used my cell while im in another country, the only dis-advantage is the bill.

regarding your findings, you did give your daughter the number, so she can dial and get you, location will be unknown, so it's up to you to let her know where you are at that moment.
