read the ten commandment with the thought that they are for your good, not just silly laws.

We do not have to keep the ten commandments. I say this because the Israelites (or Jews) are in a covenant relationship with God. Non-Jewish Christians are not a part of that covenant, and do not need to follow these laws. Trying to follow all of the laws found in Torah as a Christian would be like trying to follow England's laws as a U.S. citizen. It doesn't make sense, and there's no reason to do it. This is one of the most common misconceptions in Christianity.
HOWEVER, many of these laws should be followed by Christians, not because they're part of the Israelites' covenant, but because they are ethical (and therefore proper) behavior. Love you neighbor as yourself is one such law.
As for Jesus, his crucifixion was the beginning of God's offer of a new covenant, open to all who choose to join in it. This is the relationship that God wants to have with us that you speak of.
With regards to why people keep trying to put us back into the system of do's and don'ts, I believe the answer is so simple it's almost stupid. Most people sit there, picking phrases and quotes out of the bible, and just assume that it is written to them. In fact, the Old testament is not intended for Non-Jewish Christians. Much of the New Testament is intended for other people. For instance, Romans and Corinthians are NOT the product of the will of God being written out on paper, but instead are letters written by Paul to people who lived centuries ago. While we can learn from reading these passages, it is necessary to look at the context of what one is reading. Otherwise, the message will be misconstrued. This is why many Christians try to follow Jewish law- they don't realize it's not intended for them.

Galatian 3:19 19 What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator.
"Just as the world was not ready for the new testament before it received the old, just as the Jews were not prepared for the ministry of Christ until John The baptist had gone before Him with his claimant call to repentance, so the unsaved are in no condition today for the gospel till the Law applied to their hearts, for 'by the Law is the knowledge of Sin"(Romans 7:7). It is a waste of time to sow seed on ground which never been ploughed or spaded! To present the vicarious sacrifice of Christ to those whose dominant passion is to take fill of sin, is to give that which
is holy to the dogs. " A. W. Pink
Matthew 5:7 17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
This was our transgressions that necessitated the Savior. If we hadn't sinned, there would have been no need to sacrifice. We broke the law, and Jesus paid the fine. God loved the world with such passion that He sent His only Son to the cross of Calvary, so we might trust in him alone, in so doing we would not perish under the wrath of His law, but has everlasting life.
So my friend, it's not being legalistic. The ten commandments was given so we can reflect our daily action in it. Ask yourself a question, have you ever tell a lie ? (even a white lie), have you ever stole anything (even a piece of a candy) ? Have you made a 'god ' that suit youself (having your own believe about God, it's called idolatry.) Have you used God's name for cursing?
Remember if you broke one, you broke them all.
Knowing that God has seen your thought-life and everyone deed done in darkness will you be innocent or guilty on Judgement day?If you know that you will be guilty will you end up in heaven or hell ?
The law brings individual to a point of seeing that they have sinned against god-- that His wraths abides on them. It causes them to see their own 'goodness' can't save them. It stop their mouth of justification (Romans 3:19) and prepares the heart for the good news of the gospel.
Read John 14:21 too..
Repent and put your faith in the savior.

The real answer to your question lies within it. Go back through all of history. It is part of the human social pattern that some feel that we do must be kept in some system of control and restraint, under fear of punishment ... while others - granted, more of a minority, feel that humans will develop just fine in a system that allows their inner nature to flourish. I rather doubt this will ever be settled once and for all--it seems to be part of the engine that keeps us moving forward, the struggle between these extremes, if you will. Hope you'll pursue the question!

The Law is not binding on Christians. However, there were some parts of the Law that were carried over to God's requirements for Christians, such as laws prohibiting the worship of idols and the misuse of blood.

Luke 10:26-28 (New International Version)

Luke 10:26-28
"What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?"
He answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"
"You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live."
I don't know why some people have difficulty accepting God's grace and it is so much easier obeying God when we focus on the things we can do and want to do...

Read Romans 2:12-16. It is the 10 commandments that we will be judged by. They are what will condemn us as well. We DESERVE to go to hell according to them. God knows that we needed a savior in order to be with Him, so He gave all of us the 10 commandments to lead us to that savior. For it is not those who hear them that will be called righteous, but those who obey them.

Because by fulfilling Jesus command of "Love each other" we wouldn't break any of them anyway.....however not everyone DOES follow that so that is why MEN make dogmatic laws

You bring up a valid point. The Mosaic Law (Ten Commandments) was instituted by God Himself merely to show us His standards of living. I believe that He knew full well that we wouldn't be able to keep them. As St. Paul said it's somewhat like a mirror to show us how dirty we really are.
Besides that it's a good modal for us to live by with the help of the Holy Spirit. It's not required, but it's something to strive for.
