can i lose 18 pounds by christmas?

... i'm about 175 pounds
i'm not going to say my age/height so don't ask.
if i cut out sodas, az iced tea, etc. and only drink water.
go running for maybe 20 minutes every morning.
p.e. most weekdays, stuff like tae-bo, kickboxing, the mile
and then yoga after school
also if i start eating healthier, smaller portions.
and i plan on replacing my after school snacks with celery.

You could do it with this plan but you could also cut off a limb and have the same amount of success!

What I'm trying to say is that although do-able, it's unhealthy. On top of that most people overeat during the holidays so once you lose it you'd gain it back almost immediately and possibly even more than you lost. Losing that quickly screws up your metabolism, possibly for life.

Why not do it sensibly, losing a lot the first week like most people starting a diet, and then lose 1-2 lbs. per week. You won't lose all 18 lbs. but you'll be close and feel much better about yourself. Then just be sensible over the holidays and finish up your loss after New Years.

Let's say you lose 12 of the 18 lbs. Think about it... Come New Years you'll only have 6 lbs. to lose.

Listen, try for one pound a week (that's six pounds). The holidays are a tough time to lose weight, anyway, and many people feel they are doing good just to keep their weight at the same place during November and December. (Look at Washington Post's Lean Plate Club -- they have a holiday challenge which is just this.)

And when you get holiday food, take a tiny piece and really, really enjoy it. Sit down in front of the Christmas tree and make a big deal out of it.

Holidays are a great time to get active, though -- walking with friends and relatives, go out and walk through the neighborhoods to see the Christmas lights, go shopping and treat yourself to hot tea and an apple instead of mall food, stuff like that.

One thing you could do is to make this period your "prep" period for your New Year's Resolution to lose, say, 25 pounds in 2007. That means trying out new eating habits, starting new exercises SLOWLY, and just spending the next seven weeks getting ready to diet. Keep a food diary, and find out when you get cravings, and when you eat a bunch of junk. That will help a lot.

Good luck!

10-12 is a healthier goal, but 18 isn't as outrageous as some of these posts.
