You really need to work on basic obedience first, but I can understand how you think tricks will be a distraction and seem like more fun. It might take more patience for tricks if the basic obedience commands aren't yet mastered, but here's great site with instructions for over 20 tricks . Have fun :-)

Teaching tricks is done the same way teaching sit is done because to your dog they're ALL tricks! But if you're still figuring out how to, then yes, do see if you can find a class. The key is finding a class where YOU learn how to teach your dog, rather than a trainer who teaches your dog directly.

It's important no matter what you learn to show that you are happy and enthused when your dog does the right thing - whether it's housebreaking or sit or just getting their attention. Your dog wants to please you, and you need to be sure you use your happy voice and let him know you're pleased and proud of him. That way he immediately knows he's done the right thing.

But a great place for you to start to learn to teach your dog is at a class at Petco or Petsmart. Another place you might look is at a class for dogs that want to compete at dog shows. They show you how to train your dog for a lot of different things, and are probably the best place to show you how to focus your dogs attention.

Good luck - training is lots of fun for both you and your dog.

Well, I am currently taking our Border Collie puppy to Obedience Competition classes and I can't even tell you all the things on doggie behavior and how to understand my puppy better that I have learned. So I would definitely say, if you have the time and money, a good trainer will take you a long way.

But if you prefer to go it alone, I would recommend clicker training. We actually use this in our Obedience class as the main training method and it works wonders. It's a quick and easy way to get your dog to understand what you want him to do.

Okay, this book I picked up at Petsmart for around $25 and the clicker is under $2. It gives detailed descriptions and pictures on how to shape your dog using clicker training.

Good Luck!

Obedience classes are good for a lot of reasons. They promote socialization. They also give you the foundation for future training. They will be able to teach you how to keep your dogs attention and even though you are going to class once or twice a week it is your responsibility to work with the dog in between on what he/she has learned in class. So I would highly recommend an Obedience class.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/530mZ

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

I found that my dog always responded to kindness and reward. You must be consistent and don't keep the lesson going too long.
Teach your dog one thing at a time and when he gets it right always praise him and he will do it again for you because he likes the praise.
Never ever be angry if he doesn't do the things you are trying to teach him.

There are many sources available online. You do not need to hire a trainer to teach tricks. Many trainers offer this online.
