Brown bread is made from flour with out any of the outer casing of the wheat/barley/oats grains scrubbed off. that is what makes it tan colored. SOME brown bread is made with molasses and regualr white flour to fool us. NOT FOOLED. read the labels to see if it says "Whole grain wheat flour"
The calories are not bad for you. All food has calories. You need calories to burn to stay alive. What is healthy about brown bread, the good kind, is that those little husky bits in the flour are nourishing and good for your intestinal tract. Help you stay 'regular' if you get my meaning. The whiteness of white bread is achieved by removing all those husky bits of the wheat grain and then, perish the thought, they use clorox stuff to make it white and it will never rot!! You eat the clorox too and therefore unbleached flour is better and healthier to eat.

You should read the ingredients. Most whole wheat bread says "whole wheat flour, wheat flour, sugar...etc" the WHOLE wheat is actually BROWN, but the WHEAT FLOUR is WHITE!!! That is why it is high in calories...cuz of the white flour that they "trick and hide" in the brown bread to make it fluffier and cheaper. The best thing is to read ingredients. Sugar is also tons of extra calories that you don't need and is found in bread...almost all bread. I personally eat rye bread. Ingredients: Rye flour, water and salt. This bread is lower in calories and HIGH in fiber. Fiber is good for your heart because it helps with lowering cholesterol. Fiber prevents colon cancer and aids in weight loss too! Fiber is a MUST. We should be getting about 25-35g a day. Most of us only get 7-12g

Just because something has a lot of calories in it doesn't mean it's bad. You need to eat like 2000 calories a day. Make sure the bread you buy has 2 grams of fiber for every 100 calories.

Registered Nurse here; Hun let me clarify, it's not just brown bread. But 100% whole wheat bread, this bread doens' have as many calories as white bread. Plus the reason it benefits you health wise, is it's 100%, whole grain, assist the cardiovascular system, as well as the digestive tract, for it has fiber in it, in return it facilities bowel movements more easily, by decreasing constipation. White bread has more carbs, more fat, and the white flour is refined, which makes one's blood sugar go up fast & also falls fast. Whole grains, take longer to digest, and gradually digested. I appreciate the opportunity to address your question.
