I am wanting to visit Canada sometime next year, possibly for a week during spring break. However, I may end up moving there instead of simply visiting. I was told that depending on the length of my visit, I don't need a passport. How does that work and how do I go about getting a passport?

Whether you need a visa or not to get into Canada, it depends on you are from which country. As far as I know, you will need a passport. You should ask the government department in you country to check how to apply for a passport. Regarding details about visiting Canada, you may find more details from the Canada official sites below.

Since you mention spring break I assume your from the states. You can visit for up to 6 months under the current rules. (that could change at any time) you cannot work while on a visit for that you would need your american passport and something called a permant residents visa. This you get from the Canadian Govt. Consider it the equivalent of a green card. You would also need to get a Social Insurance Card. As soon as you get those apply for a Provincial health card. Govt health coverage will kick in 3 months later

As sad as it is, you do not need as passport to actually get into Canada, but if you want to come back to the U.S you need one to get back in.

If your staying in Canada, to do it legally, you would need a visa.
