"The party wants to manage immigration by only allowing those who will benefit the economy to come to Britain, with the overall number limited by the capacity of public services and other infrastructure.

"We are saying: look at the economic benefits of migration, make sure we make the most of them, but then actually have a limit which is set according to the pressures of health and education and housing. That’s sensible politics," he told BBC television."

What a novel idea! That could be applied to the US as well!

What do you think?

Theresa A, of COURSE we would have to stop illegal immigration to make it work. We have far more illegal immigration than legal, at this point.

Until we can solve illegal immigration, homelessness, rising health care costs, unemployment, etc., we need to close the gates. We're so concerned with helping every other nation on the planet that our own nation is falling into ruin.

British politicians have at long last woken up to the fact that the Brits are coming perilously close to civil unrest ... illegal immigration from mainly Eastern Europe, and immigration from the ex British Colonies, mainly muslims, have made people literally speaking see red ... however, come January 2007, when Bulgarians and Romanians will be free to "flow" across European borders, the majority of them will end up in Britain, and there's not a darn thing any British Prime Minister can do about it, apart from paying lip service to a notion they won't be able to carry out, since they are to a certain extent at the mercy of the EU ... the question in Britain is not IF, but WHEN, the patience of ordinary Brits will run out ....

As for applying the same policy to the U.S., our own immigration laws already stipulate that a prospective immigrant should prove financial eligibility, have a certain educational standard (at least equivalent to High School Diploma), and as we all know medical and background checks, and also fall within the quota (it is a little known fact that U.K. citizens can't even apply for immigration to the United States since they have exceeded the quota ... they can't even enter the visa lottery).

What IS a novel idea is that we are the only country I have ever heard of who actively encourages ill educated, poor, people to illegally enter our country and settle here ... if anyone has heard of ANY other country anywhere in the world with the same suicidal immigration policy, maybe you could let me know ...

Isn't that what our laws on immigration already do, when enforced?? Immigration enforced would control the numbers coming in, why they are coming, if they would be an asset to the country or a drain on taxes, etc. It's nothing new, just nothing being enforced very well. Legal immigration has always been good for the economy, illegal immigration has NOT.

Wouldn't it be a novel idea to DEMAND OUR IMMIGRATION LAWS BE ENFORCED.?

Yeah its a good idea, ive always voted for labour in the uk not tory party but theres way too many immigrants now. Theres only so many jobs a nation can provide for its people and a country's citizens should be first in line to be employed, not an immigrant just because they work for cheap. There's just too many people in the world >.<

the caveat would be that we stop the illegal immigration. we already have legal immigration that works quite well. however, the problem is that those that ignore the laws and the methodology proposed by the United States government for coming to this country is ignored. they prefer to dictate to us what our immigration laws will be; and not the other way around. No other country in the world puts up with that especially, Mexico.. it is an invasion and if you don't believe it you just try to stop it..

There are so many things that would need to happen first; but yes, this would be great for the United States.

For starters, we'd need to simply deny social services of ANY kind to someone who is not a legal citizen. No social security number, NO SERVICES. Our forms for aide actually have boxes to be checked off marked "ILLEGAL alien". Unfortunately; we made it that way, but now it's time to correct it.

We can't even provide for the people who are honest citizens; so to set a limit would be perfect. The ideal situation though would be to ENFORCE our policies. That is one of the biggest problems. You can't have rules but have no one to enforce them.

I believe many more countries implement this idea. It is a good idea but America is so diverse because of its lack of rules. America is already ruined but now is a better time than the future to take action.

That is how it is supposed to work in the U.S. already. Plus you are supposed to have a sponsor.

Why do so very many people not know the difference between "to" and "too"? Is the education system completely dead?

That is a great idea, but will never happen here. We have the liberals to see to that.

It's great. To many people coming here for handouts and not wanting to work for what they get.
