Actually websites DO run on operating systems... Although it is completely transparant. There is no way of knowing what operating system the websites are running on since the output is all the same. It could be Windows, Linux, Unix, Apple.

I'm willing to bet most (if not all) major companies that run their own web servers are running Windows.

Most servers run some form of Linux. Not Windows. Windows really sucks for just about everything, but it is easy to set up, so people use it. Linux is usually more difficult to set up, but it works very well. The servers that are often down or need work run Windows. The servers that haven't even been turned off in years run Linux. It is so stable it doesn't need to be shut down often like Windows. There is a way to find out what a web site's server is. Go to http://news.netcraft.com and type in the address of the site you want to know in the upper left hand corner.

Oh, and operating systems on servers are nearly the same as operating systems on everything else. In fact, you can use the same operating system on your computer that is being used on a server. Well, I'm not so sure about Windows servers, but I do know about Linux.
