My sister's heels are cracked on the outside heel of each foot. She has tried several remendies. They become painful and some people have tried crazy glue to seal them up and get rid of the pain. I'm suspicious about this, but she says it works.

She buffs them and puts the proper medication on them, but still has a problem healing them.

Does anyone know what causes this and what to do about it?

She does not have fungus.

Has anyone cured this? And if so how?

Your sister needs to see a doctor a Podiatrist. She may have to have stitches. Also she can check with a wound specialist her primary care doctor should know of one. A wound specialist cares for patents who have sores that won't heal. Also if she is diabetic that could be a cause. The use of supper glue will close the wound but I don't think the chemicals in the glue are good to have in you blood. The bottom line is she needs to see a doctor. If she gets a bad infection she could conceivably loos a foot. Make sure she sees a doctor soon...Good luck...

I have that problem too, and I solve it by doing one or two 'mini-pedicures' every week, and believe me, my feet are fantastic! First, you need: 1. A pumice stone, which is an exfoliating stone you can buy at most drugstores 2. A good moisturiser 3. A pair of old socks 4. A couple of plastic bags (produce bags are ideal) 5. Some olive oil or other oil 6. Hand/foot grooming tools, like a cuticle pusher, nail file and nail clipper. I do this in the shower because I HATE sitting around with my feet soaking in water. It saves time also. You can do it by soaking your feet the usual way if you like. On a day when you have to do EVERYTHING in the shower (wash your hair, shave, etc), plug the shower drain so the water collects, and bathe as usual. Your feet will soak while you're showering. Then sit down somewhere, preferably on the edge of the tub, and thoroughly pumice off as much of your dead skin as possible. This only takes a few minutes. Then thoroughly wash your feet, rinse them and dry them. Right away, while your cuticles and nails are soft, push back your cuticles, clip and file your nails, and - THIS IS IMPORTANT!! - file the top of your nails too, because this smooths out the ridges and removes discolouration. Apply a generous amount of moisturiser and oil, stick your feet into the plastic bags, and cover your feet with the socks. Let your feet 'soak' in the moisturiser bath for an hour at least, or as long as you can stand it.

My grandmother always recommended right before bedtime use gobs of vaseline slathered all over the cracked heel and than put on white socks. If you do this for two or three days the skin will become very soft and eventually the cracks will heal.

I still do this whenever my heels get too dry. Very simple, quick, and seems to work fine.

Go to the drugstore and get a heavy cream made esp for this problem. Sometimes the feet will sweat and this can cause the cracking. Keeping the feet dry with a medicated powder will do it.

I pumice my heels after every shower/bath. Or she could soak her feet in the evening & follow it up by putting an ointment on her heels (lotions don't work). My pharmacist recommened Aquaphore. It's important that she sleep with it on. Sounds ridiculous but I use plastic gallon bags.

Does she have bad calluses as well? They cause pain & unless she does something about them pads won't work. I saw a foot specialist who shaved them off. I figured I could do what he does & I use a razor blade (he is appalled & I don't blame him but it works).

My routine is this: pumice, razor blade when needed, then ointment each time I bathe.

If I don't follow this routine faithfully, the pain lets me know it's time to do it again.

I used to have really awful cracked heels as well. I found these things at the store called like heel covers or something. They are made by Sally Hansen. They are pink and cloth. I put the lotion on my feet, then slip these on, then put on socks. After sleeping, I gently scrub them with a pumice and apply more lotion. My heels are so much better and don't hurt at all! What kind of medication does she use on them. Sometimes cracked, dry feet r caused by athlete's foot. They don't have to itch to have the fungus. If she hasn't tried all ready, try some lamisil or something else for athlete's foot.

Put a cold cream or vasoline on her feet and a pair of socks to sleep in every night and wear shoes all day. Sometimes it is caused by going bare footed. Only wear sandals on special occassions.

Candida albicans (yeast) fungus can work from the inside out (I know). If it recurs, she should check out eating an anti-yeast diet, including non-sweetened yogurt.

www.hufa.org has a yeast link that has more basic info on this naturally occuring fungus.
