It's not absolutely necessary, but most of the midshipmen (and cadets at the other two service academies) are varsity lettermen from high school.
Besides displaying physical fitness, it also displays leadership, social / activity involvement, and the markings of a well-rounded individual.
A physical fitness test is one of the many things that you'd have to go through as a service academy applicant. You'll have to do things like a standing broad-jump, a shuttle run, push-ups, chin-ups, maybe something like throwing a basketball as far as you can while on your knees and without your hands touching the floor on your follow-through.
Of course, there's also a congressional nomination to get in order to enter any of the academies, as well as an interview at the academy itself, submission of high school records, a medical examination, and so on.
The service academies are the hardest universities in America to get into.
That's because you not only have to be a very good student, but also pass all their physical and medical requirements as well as procuring a nomination from your Congress member or one of your state's two senators.
Only about 1 out of every 15 or 20 applicants are selected; most of the midshipmen and cadets at the service academies did not get in on their first try.

any of the 3 guard spots ( counting sf as guard) they always have the ball you dont have to worry about the point getting you the ball. You can have it in your hands the whole time and do as you please. I played high school ball in new york ...we were in the best conf. in the city whenever we played a good team the point guards would get scared as if they would die because of basketball. In a time one game i asked coach to let me be the point. I was the shooting guard. I have 37 points that game and we beat the beat school in the city. The best way to do things is to handle it yourself ...and they best spot in varsity basketball is the PG...have th eball all the time and you call the shots....you're like the 2nd coach

It's not really all that important. They just like to see that because you are usually in shape if you play sports
