Being a former chef, the best alternative is a red onion and a clove of garlic, chop fine and chp the garlic separatley, and the combine when cooking, as the garlic burns.
We used to do this in alot of the restaurants I worked in Shallots are expensive and they also do not keep long, we used to kee p them in oil and clarified butter, that way you just added them to a pan and made you sauce, this is the best alternative I have found.

Positively, red onions are the best substitute for shallots in a recipe. You cannot discern the difference. So in a pinch use red onions. They are also less expensive and less perishable. Enjoy!

I would think any kind of onion. Shallots are just a type of onion.

Green onions, leeks, or ramps. I even once substituted diced green peppers for shallots in a bourbon chicken recipe and it turned out awesome.

Not just any onion; make it a RED onion. At the greengrocer, select the small or smaller ones since the taste is less mature and 'younger'. Adding garlic might not be a good idea but then it depends what you are making/cooking.

shallots have a flavor of onion and garlic together. I recommend substituting a clove of garlic and some scallions (white only).
