I think pit bulls have become the working man's dog of choice in England to replace the classic English bulldog. I don't think owning these dogs is as much about yob football hooliganism as it is about a kind of old-fashioned 'patriotism' just beneath the surface. I think it is connected to the trend going on in England now to fly the cross of St. George instead of the Union Jack -- a grass roots reaction to world news and problems.

Although pit bulls emerged from a bad breeding history, all the ones I've seen poking about in England appear to be lovable creatures and much loved by their owners who mostly seem admittedly a bit rough around the edges but also seem cheerful enough types. In other words, I don't think the stereotype is quite what you think it is. It's less about thugs and more about working class conservatism. I can't comment on owners of pit bulls in the US, but yes, the dog has a tough image and often certain owners gravitate to that. Interesting question as the dog is definitely a symbol of aggression.

It depends whether or not you regard the Princess Royal as a yob. She owns three Pit Bull Terriers. My answer to your question is No it is not only yobs that own Pit Bull Terriers.

mostly yes. The same sort who own staffies and other so called macho dogs.
Of course in England, nobody will have a pit bull since they are illegal. They were put on the banned list over 10 years ago and the law said that they should be neutered, insured, muzzled. So hopefully the breed will die out soon.
XContary to what some silly Americans think, the Princess royal actuaslly owns English bull terriers and the other reference to them being the poor man's choice will refer to Staffordshire bull terriers. Nobody would advertise the fact that they have a pit bull in England because it would be taken from them and put to sleep if it wasn't legally licenced,neutered, never off the lead, iinsured and muzzled.

NO ...believe it or not not all owners are'yobs' its only really the 'f**k wits' that use them as a 'status' or fashion accessory.!There are some genuine owners who have pit bulls its just that the'yobs' are so in your face that the genuine owners don't get a 'look in'!


PS the true definition of a yob is a cruel & brutal person but these days its used to describe some one with anti social behaviour - hooligan or social idiot!

No not at all. A good friend of mine owns one and it really is his world. I have a Dobermann personally but his dog is the best I've ever seen treated. Yes some yobs do because of the "hardness" of the dog. Unfortunately this also gives the dogs a bad name. Dogs are like children they behave as they are raised.

No, my octogenarian neighbour who was married to an "Honourable" (now deceased) and has impeccable manners, owns a pit bull terrier for self protection against yobs. It seems to work....

no its not just yobs who own them and also for the record pit bulls are NOT banned in this country (england) only the american pit bull is banned, its an entirely diiferent breed. same as the british and french bulldogs are different just because they share the same name doesnt make them the same dog.

strangely, no. I met a nice mum & dad, kids grown up, with a pit bull ***** and lovely puppies. I was still on edge with that dog around.
A yob is like the equivalent of a redneck.
