Depends on the dog. Some small dogs need a harness. Their necks are so tiny. For other dogs, the harness can encourage some dogs to pull on the leash.
For most dogs the collar works well, but sounds like you have already worked it out for you and your dog.

Ive never liked harnesses. They promote the dog walking you as opposed to you walking the dog unless the dog is well trained or a small breed.

You have more control over a larger dog with a collar opposed to a harness.

I tried the harness and leash but found that my 14 week old Bichonpoo behaved better with a collar and leash. On a harness and leash she spun herself around in circles.

I prefer a traditional collar and leash. It was a little hard to teach a "pulling dog/puppy" to walk well with them, but eventually we got it.

Now a few years back, when my American Eskimo was much younger, my hubby used to put a harness on her and a husky mix we had and take them roller blading, um, actually, they took him. Was much better on the dogs than a collar that pulled on the neck when they pulled hubby.

We have a Siberian Husky. She wears a harness all the time per the breeder's direction. Their necks are bigger than their head and therefore can 'back out' of a collar.

To walk her or maintain complete control we use a choke collar. She knows that means she has to toe the line.

You were concerned about being able to keep your min pin under control on a leash? Are you a child under three?

Per my Lab's obedience training classes, a collar and lead were used to train him to walk with me. Of course a pocket full of treats encouraged better attention as well. : )
Have fun giving your baby a daily dose of attention and exercise!
