We all would like to think that we are good people, and can make it on our own and don' t need something like Grace or charity, right?

Not at all. I saw High Society. It was a great movie, and Grace Kelly was well cast.

Ok, divine grace, if that is what you mean. refers to God's gifts to humankind, including life, creation, and salvation. More narrowly but more commonly, grace describes the means by which humans are saved from original sin and granted salvation...so on and so on....

So, as an atheist..it isn't about grasping the concept..it's really about the fact that it doesn't really apply to the situation because atheists do not believe in a personal god.

An atheists view: Life is something that begins when we are conceived, we are not created by anyone other than our parents (ie..no divine entity made us be) and salvation is not an issue because atheists do not believe in heaven and hell so therefore we have nothing to save ourselves from in the hope that we can go somewhere more pleasing. As for original sin.."that we are all born as hopeless sinners and that it is Gods grace that is our salvation"...we don't believe in god, and definately don't agree that we are all hopeless sinners (what a blatantly terrible way to describe your followers)..and salvation I have already covered.

Now if you want to use grace as a term that describes a persons ability to develop, improve and expand their character..sure..an atheist can understand that just as well as a Christian can..it just lacks the supernatural connotation. I believe that it is done with a purer motive too because there is no-one sitting there when we are at deaths door saying.."well now, have you lived your life well enough to deserve to spend an eternity in heaven, or do you deserve to go to hell and burn?" It's called a sense of self-responsibility and good morals..which surprisingly enough..the vast majority of atheists do have, contrary to popular belief.

Charity is the same thing as selfless love..now that is another thing that an atheist most certainly can experience..although it is tied to theology as the most important of the virtues it is not beyond an athiest to feel an umlimited loving kindness towards other human beings...such as a mother might have for a child or a wife for her husband.

Now, you made the remark that we all like to think that we are good people...Atheists have an advantage over Christians in that matter because we don't have anyone trying to tell us consistently that we are sinners...we know that if we are moral, responsible members of society that we are in essence good people..and that we probably can make it on our own.

Do we NEED grace and charity? No, but if we live our lives in the way I have described above then we have no need to worry about them specifically.

I think it is a hard concept for religous people to grasp...obviously they haven't been able to grasp the grace of the idea of a society without medieval brainwashing and rash religous violence.

Will doing away with religion solve all wars..absolutely not, but it's a good start. No more men yelling 'god is great' running into markets with bombs on them. For those of you who are too absorbed in your religous fantasies, those are real people that died, not just a story on the news. Could be your mom, or your brother, or YOU. But who cares right, you get eternal joy after you die...What is the significance of life here on earth, right?

Morons.
