Every time I go to clip her claws she jerks them away or wriggles out from under me or from my hold. I have even tried to do it while she was relaxed. She either does the above or tries to bite my hand. She is an indoor cat and I really need them clipped because she keeps getting stuck on the carpet they are so sharp. I don't want to pay money, though, to have someone else do it. Any suggestions?

How old is she?
First things first you can try the easy way...
Everytime you pet her play with her feet until shes comfortable enough to let you hold them with out pulling away (could take a while...if shes older...could take even longer)

Or theres the hard way...
Have someone help you. wrap the kitty in a towel (makes things alot less stressful. Pull out one foot at a time, grip the foot firmly but not to hard and quickly clip the white of the nail off every toe (becareful not to cut to far...if your not sure just nip the tips off) while the other persons holding the cat. She wont like it one bit and will probably run like crazy when your done but I promise your not hurting her, just bruising her ego...lol.

Good luck and be very careful.

Sandy R’s method is pretty good, it works for me too. Until they are used to it I can tell you it may be difficult. You place the cat so it is sitting on your lap with their back against your stomach. I face the cat toward the TV and turn on animal planet. Sometimes they get fixated on the programs which helps. I pick up one paw at a time, press down on the paw slighty to protrude the nail, and then I clip. I trained them when they were babies and I can tell you it takes a while before they are completely comfortable with this. Also, when I cut the nails successfully, I would always tell them how wonderful they are followed by catnip. This way, they know there is a treat involved.

I have heard about a cat cover you can buy and put over your cat that she/he can't get out of. It looks like just a cover that still exposes there head and paws, but they can't run or get agitated. I haven't tried it, but sounds like good idea for a person who is alone and doesn't have anyone to hold the cat.

If you do have an another person to help you, then turn the cat, cradle on their arm, and proceed to talk to your cat telling it, it's OK. And when it's all over he/she will just love you for it and feel so much better. I know.

And, did you get the cat clippers from the pet store? I hope so, because they are intended to get it just right!

Does this help? I hope so.

Wrap her in a towel and while another person holds her you can get each paw out individually and clip them that way. She may need to be held by the scuff by the person restraining if she is putting up a fight otherwise the towel should keep her under better control.

Put the clippers and your intention away for a while. When you are having happy, quiet moments with your cat get her used to having her paws massaged. I am sure there are happy acupuncture points in the paws just as we have in our feet.

When you first start clipping be satisfied to get one or two nails at a time. And just keep with it. It can be a long process and it needs to be done.

To start, the next time she has to go to the vet have the vet tech clip her nails for you. It may require a small charge and it will help for a while. The vet office always clips them shorter than I would risk doing it and it will be a while before they grow way out again. While you are waiting for them to grow you can continue with the massaging. So you will get there eventually.

Have you tried a scratching post or a good, stiff car mat that she can scratch on? I'm rather nervous about trying to clip claws because I don't want to get into the quick.

Or you could wrap her in a towel or something similarly thick.

Good luck!

I have had several indoor cats. I hold them on my lap,
in front of me with their back towards my body with my hands around their stomach between there front and back paws. Then I pick up one paw at a time and trim their nails. Hope this will work for you.

well my first suggestion was to sit in a way that you can place her between your legs to hold her still, btu that doesnt seem to be something she will be ok with. so my next thought, something i personally do, is to have someone hold her by the scruff of her neck. this can inform her that you mean business and your the boss for now. if she gets too frustracted take a break for a bit them chase her down and continue. =)

Sounds like you need another person to hold the cat while you trim her nails, then after a few times of this she may get used to it and you can handle the job alone.

My husband holds I clip. That is the only way I get my cats done.
