The Christian God has three names; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. But some say that that is polytheism. The Allah of Islam has 99 names. Should they be called polytheists, too? Please help me understand the difference. I'm confused by the answers I got to this question -> http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AtAbkYrgYBkGANc5pjfwN9vzy6IX?qid=20061110175517AAv48Ny

People who say Christians are polytheistic are ignorant of the Blessed Trinity.

The Blessed Trinity Is 3 Persons In the 1 Godhead. Not 3 separate entities.

Christianity is monotheistic.

Polytheism, by definition is a belief is more then 1 G-D. Some people, not all, believe Christianity is polytheistic in the sense the trinity, is 3 separate entities. It is generally believe however that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are part of the great Abrahamic (monotheistic faiths.)

I didn't know that Christians were called "polytheists". Christians worship the Triune God. He is three Persons and one God. This is a mystery that no one can explain. Anyone who tries to explain the Triune God/the Trinity will end up preaching false doctrine. Since God tells us that He is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost, we need to simply believe it because He always tells the Truth. By the way, that is His Name, not Names.

Christians are Monotheistic. It is true that we believe in the Godhead, or three in one. This is the Trinity- the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit..as humans it is hard for us to comprehend this. Let me adopt a method from St. Patrick- look at a regular three leaved clover. It is one leaf, yet it has three parts...these represent the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Father sent the Son, who died for our sins, and who comissioned the Holy Spirit to aid believers.

ive always believed that Islamic people and Christians are the same, in the way that we both have one God. I believe that we BOTH worship the SAME God. So I don't think there's any wrong religion as long as you do right in life, and have one God. But to answer your question... I agree with you! I didn't know we were called polythiests, but now that i do.. thats just crazy!!

Maybe it's because Christians believe in Jesus, and Some people believe that Jesus is a God all his own, since we call Him the Son Of God.

The people who call Christians polytheists might be the people who reject the idea of the Trinity. They see God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit as three seperate entities, all worshipped by Christians.

Allah might have 99 names, but they're 99 names for the same entity. So no, they would not be polytheists.

The 99 attributes of God Like All-Loving, All Merciful,
All-Knowing, Most Severe in Punishment are his perfect characteristics that he has shaped his creation after ( A Dog can be loving while a Lion can be severe in aggressive). Muslims believe God is infinite and his perfect characteristics and titles are impossible to exhaust. But we believe he is One and not to be worshipped with his creation.

So Some Muslims believe that Christians are polythesist because Muslims believe Jesus to be a prophet of God and we believe the Holy Ghost to be the Angel Gabriel. So when Christians say they worship a prophet and an angel, we say that are putting partners with God.

99 names does not mean Muslims believe in 99 gods!

For example, a person's name may be Robert.. but some call him Robbie, or Bob, or Bobby or by any other nickname that relates to his personality.

Christians are not polytheists, by definition polytheists means "multiple Gods". And in Christianity there is only one God. It doesn't matter what you call your God, as long as it is only one God you're monotheist.

Christians are monotheist. God is the father, the son, and the holy ghost. Think of God in the same way in which we were made: we have a body of flesh, a mind (or conscious), and a soul (that thing that when it is in us our bodies are alive, and if it leaves, we are dead).
