The sauteed onions are for borsch, which I have to have at a dinner in two days. This is my first time making it, and this is also my first time using any kind of oil (I'm not really big on cooking). I don't want to waste my money on olive oil because I know that I will never use it again, but I don't want to ruin the soup. My teacher has informed us that if we don't bring our dishes, we could ruin the whole event. Yes, I am just a little bit desperate.

I wouldn't suggest using corn oil. If you really don't want to buy the Olive oil (you really should though), using butter would be better than corn oil. Corn oil has a horrible taste.

Olive oil has a specific taste, that is why it is specified in some recipes. Depending on what is called for, virgin, extra, etc. determines how strong the flavor of the olive oil is.
Using corn oil or such would work, but the taste would not be quite the same.

I agree that you should buy it (the small bottles aren't too expensive). If you do use the corn, I would half the amount. It has a much different flavor and can tend to taste too oily in a dish. Using half should still cook the onions properly and not produce a heavy flavor! (or, not as healthy, but you could use unsalted butter instead of either!)

ok....take this coming from an italian/greek chef. BUY THE OLIVE OIL. buy a bottle of Extra Virgin ( a small one will do) and store it in a cool dry place. You can use it in a variety of dishes and if you REALLY DONT cook, you can use it as a moisturizing agent for you hands or a mask for your hair (WORKS WONDERS!!!)
There are a ton of spa recipes out there that you will appreciate having good olive oil for. (PS you can burn olive oil in candle lamps, too.)
YOU WILL RUIN THE FLAVOR OF YOUR DISH WITH CORN!!!

There are no substitutes for olive oil.

Try sauteing something, say garlic, in olive oil and then try in corn oil, soybean oil if you don't believe me. Spread it over a sandwich and you'll know what I mean.
The smaller bottles will not cost you an arm and a leg. You will never know what real borscht taste like if you insist on replacing olive oil.

Yes, you can use corn oil for this purpose. Olive oil is healthier, and has a nicer flavor, but it may not be enough better to make it worth buying it for this purpose.

When you cook more often you may want to consider keeping olive oil as a staple.

Beets are strongly flavored enough that any flavor from the corn or olive oil won't be noticed. Just keep the heat under your pan low.

go ahead use corn oil ,this is not going to ruin the borsch, besides it is more practical than wasting a whole lot of olive oil.
