There are different types of retreats held by different types of organisations or religious orders. True, some are designed to help and aid rehab from drug and alcohol abuse but these are usually very well advertised as such. Many offer a space a silence and are described as "time out" - time away from a busy schedule to look at your life with the help of another person who is there to guide you. They are very confidential. True, they can be expensive, because they often take place in large centres where costs are high{maintenance}, but many places accept a donation. I don't think they are money making rackets at all - most of them aren't anyway. Some retreats are very much prayer based and some aide you simply to reflect on your life and gain a new perspective on them. They can't do you any harm. If you can I would go and try out the experience, especially as it was recommended for you. You may find it a wee bit hard to start with as you will be with people who you don't know and the experience will be very new. Life is worth a risk. Best of luck. hope you enjoy it.

Retreats do not neccessarily have to be religious. For instance, I worked in Grand Teton National Park this summer, and we had "bungalow retreats" at the lodge I worked at, which, as you say, is a place usually run by religious people, but believe me, the people who ran this lodge were FAR from religious. A retreat is just a nice place to relax, and not be bothered by your cell phone (which coincidentally, mine never worked there anyways, how convienent), or any other secular annoyances. Go, enjoy yourself. If it turns out bad, c'est la vie. WAIT, if you are going with religious people and you are not religious, I would refrain, and say that you have some other plans. Good luck!

I've been to a few and they're wonderful. My favorites were at Ridgecrest, a Baptist ran retreat center in north Carolina. There are classes at most of them focused on the retreat "subject" (usually religion) and lots of time for personal reflection.

A retreat costs about 55.00 USD, that's for your food, they usually start on a friday and end on Sundays.
I have been to at least two in the past, but made the mistake og going with my sister and our best friend, so we did not take it seriously, PLUS we were kids.
But retreats usually take place in beautiful places, with beautiful gardens, I don't think it'll hurt you to attend one.

Mt last GF used to go to the local Buddhist Temple and eat only vegetables once a day for a few days.
She came back relaxed and happy....so it must be good.

I've been to one in the beginning of my medical training year, they're a wonderfully fantastic location, to relocate youself, relax, and help inprove your physical, and mental state.
I personally recommend to you to attend one, it'll seriously help improve your mental state by two-fold!

yes I go to a catholic school in ireland who brought us on 2
they're ok just a doss day with activities and prayer and reflection. if there is a special reason you're going it could be good for you.
however beware of ones that require you to fast and go bearfoot etc.

Yes, there are many, just check them out on the internet. I guess I don't understand that you've been "advised" to go, do you want to go? Check them out very carefully.
