I'm not familiar with the quote, but he is right in the sense that Christianity (at least in its current form) is not the same religion founded by Jesus. Jesus was truly a wise man. Personally, I think Thomas Jefferson was truly a wise man and very much doubt he is in hell (though I don't believe in hell anyway).

It was most likely in response to fundamental Christians whom wanted the new found congress to use it's authority to propagate Christianity. He made several such comments in his response to several church authorities whom were trying to 'high jack' the new found congress. Thomas Jefferson was most likely a Pagan or a Pantheist. For Thomas Jefferson's personal view on Jesus, the scripture and it's validity there is no better authority than Thomas Jefferson Bible.

Thomas Jefferson isn't likely to go to hell for that statement, because he spoke very highly of Jesus Christ and had a great admiration for Jesus and his teachings. Jefferson simply wasn't in support of the organized religion that calls itself Christianity.

The only one with the power to decide and judge is God, he knows all the deeds and every little thing of his life. And NO , he merely pointed out a obvious truth depicted in the Bible it is easy to know when something comes from God and when it doesn`t , By the fruits you shall know them. If the church of that time reflected the intrisic characteristics of love, mercy and hope he would have said differently. In short men can obstruct, but never stop the work of God. Are you helping or obstructing?
