Some years ago a wacko named Jim Jones went to Guyana with a lot of his followers. After they had been there for awhile he gave them each a glass of poisoned kool aid to drink. They all died there, men, women and children. It was horrible. The people that went with him drank the kool aid without question. If they knew it was poisoned I think they would have drank it anyway. I don't remember if they knew or not. So to tell someone keep drinking the kool aid, I guess is to tell them to continue following without thinking.

In the Jonestown Massacre in the 1960s I believe there were a huge group of followers of a man who claimed to be religious. They moved with him and started up a community and he brainwashed them into thinking their lives were great even though he nearly starved them to death and they worked 6 days a week all day. When he knew the U.S. was going to intervene on him, he had them all drink (and even feed their children) kool-aid that was laced with cyanide. They all killed themselves because they were brainwashed. It was a huge deal in history--I just had an essay question on this in a class, actually.

Its a reference to the Jim Jones mass suicide, in which the cult leader brainwashed his hundreds of followers into drinking cyanide laced kool-aid, from which none survived.
It means you are accused to believing what a charismatic leader "tells" you to believe, without benefit of your own logic, analysis, or objective thought about the topic.

It is a reference to the late Jim Jones cult. I say 'late' because he ordered his followers to drink poison laced Kool-aid. Hundreds died, a few came to their senses and fled into the jungle.

"drink the kool-aid" basically means "buy the premise" or "believe the hype"
If you're "drinking the kool-aid" then you're buying into someone else's beliefs or bullsh*t.
It's a reference to the masacre at Jonestown:

Look at these answers. They know way more than me, but I basically knew that it meant that you were blindly believing something. Isn't the drug culture great?
