I took the car in to the dealer and they mentioned to me that the brakes were worn out to 3mm in the front and 2mm in the rear. They told me that they start out at 9mm. I don't hear any squealing yet, just feel a bit of a wobble. Is it necessary to change the brakes immediately or can I put it off for a month? I put less than 1000 miles on it each month. Too bad the car isn't paid off yet - it would be easy to go ahead and do the service!
Thanks.

3 mm is pretty worn, however I would definitely get a second opinion. Rear brakes wear a lot slower than front brakes so if you are trying to moderate your spending, get the front ones done now and leave the rear ones for later (I think your rear ones can probably last you several more months.

The reason I recommend the second opinion is that typically the front brakes wear 3-4x faster than the rear brakes. 80% (approx) of your stopping power comes from your front brakes. Typically your rear brakes wear significantly slower. Or when he gave you the 2mm for the rear brake, he failed to mention that the rear brake shoes probably only started out as 4 mm shoes. (I'm assuming you probably have drums in the back)

The reason I recommend getting them done now is before the brake pads in front bite into the rotors, you can more than likely have the rotors machined. The machining is typically included in the cost to have your brakes done. If you go metal to metal, typically the metal back part of the pad will damage the rotors and you'll definitely need to have them replaced. This can easily run $60 per side for rotors. Definitely worth getting the fronts replaced if you can save the rotors and only get them machined (aka turned).

brakes are safe up to about 5mm, at least that is how we measure them here in order for them to be able to be sold, they have to have at least 5mm on them, or they get changed out. If you are at 3mm and 2mm, go to Brake Check or just brakes and only replace the pads. Should run you about $200.

your ok they are just saying your brakes are about due for new ones and you talk about a wobble? do you feel it in your brake petal if so need new rotors or have them turned when you get your brakes done.
