I am going to answer this question because for me this was a moral issue. In fact I was caught in this delimma not to long ago. I have son that was recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, and because of this diagnoses, he had extreme anger outburstes and major mood swings. He is actually on an antidepressent. It made a world of difference for the better. So, I think that it depends on the child and the severity of the situation.

Children have been put on antidepressants from the age of four onward. One of the problems to watch out for, however, is the way a child's brain processes the antidepressant. There have been many documented cases of children attempting suicide or having suicidal thoughts after taking an antidepressant.

My 6 year old stepdaughter is in the same boat as jtruitt82's son. However , she was started on prozac when she was 4 1/2. It all depends on the child and thier past experiences. Heretity plays a major role in it too.

Children can begin receiving affection as soon as they're born --perhaps earlier. There's no better antidepressant than affection.

thank god you aren't asking for any real kids. i don't think children of any age should be on antidepressants. there are too many possible side effects especially for children.
